Santa Clara Vies for Record 11th Consecutive Title
Aquamaids look to sweep solo, duet, and team titles
The Santa Clara Aquamaids enter this years U.S. National Synchronized Swimming Championships tied with their cross-bay rivel, the Walnut Creek Aquanuts, at 10 consecutive team titles. Walnut Creek topped the field from 1980-1989 while Santa Clara has been the constant winner since 1993. The Aquamaids look to break that record next week in Long Island, NY.
Santa Clara is led by the sports lone male elite athlete, Bill May. May is favored to win the solo and duet competitions. Walnut Creek and the Riverside Aquettes will look to challenge Santa Clara for the team event title as the Aquamaids will be lacking seven of their top athletes who are members of the Olympic Training Squad presently training for the upcoming FINA World Championships in Barcelona and Pan American Games in Santo Domingo. Because of this deficit, members of Santa Claras B team have moved up to complete the A squad.
The 2003 U.S. National Synchronized Swimming Championships will be held at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, NY. More than 175 athletes will vie for national titles in the solo, duet and team events in the nations most prestigious competition. The U.S. National Championships is hosted by Long Island Synchro in conjunction with the Long Island Sports Commission.
We hosted this same event in 1999. We are looking forward to hosting this event again this year, said Sheila Wright, local meet manager. We are hoping that the exposure of the sport will bring more interest to our area.
