Day 1

California Clubs Lead the Way to Finals

Indianapolis, IN-- The 2005 Speedo Junior Championships is starting out with an exciting battle for the top seed. The championship kicked off Friday with the trio competition, and the day wrapped with three California clubs leading the way.

The Walnut Creek Aquanuts dominated with trios placing 1st, 4th and 7th. Close behind were the Riverside Aquettes placing 2nd, 3rd, and 8th in trio. Both teams are swimming athletes on the 2008 Olympic Training Squad.

California dominates the solo competition. Eight of the top 10 spots are occupied by California Clubs. This could be the second consecutive year that Christina Jones wins the solo competition. Jones (Santa Clara, Calif.) leads the 2008 Olympic Training Squad as well.

The Riverside Aquettes snagged first place in team semi-finals with Santa Clara trailing in second at the close of the day. 2008 Olympic hopefuls and training squad members Brooke Abel and Barb Nesbitt lead Riverside (Riverside, Calif.).

More than 300 elite athletes ages 14-18 will vie for junior national titles in the solo, duet, trio and team events. The competition is being held at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio. Competition continues Saturday for the final day of routines, and the final determination of the 2005 U.S. Junior National Team.

The Speedo Junior Championships is hosted by CCS Tailspinners, a synchronized swimming program sponsored by Canton City Schools Program.

Top routines will advance to the U.S. National Championships, April 28-30 in Federal Way, Wash., while top athletes will progress to the final phase of the Junior Team Trials to determine the U.S. Junior National Team. The U.S. Junior National Team is slated to compete at the FINA Junior World Championships, July 17-31 in Montreal, Canada.
